Halle Berry is letting fans in on her health journey and battle with Diabetes and domestic abuse. The beloved Hollywood actress has always been transparent about her life and journey, including her struggles behind the scenes. In a resurfaced interview, she talks about her constant fight to break unhealthy cycles in her life.
Halle Berry was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes at the age of 22. Halle took the radical approach of going on a Keto Diet to help regulate her body and reduce her sugar levels. Her approach to her insulin-dependent Diabetes was a cause for controversy in the diabetic community because the star claimed to have “cured” her diabetes at one point after suffering from a diabetic coma.
Many sites believe that Berry’s Diabetes was misdiagnosed and that she possibly had type 2 instead of type 1. She faced backlash for “spreading misinformation” about Diabetes being “curable.” This was made worst when she had a child in her 40s. Many felt that she was a high-risk pregnancy being over 40 and diabetic and that she was sending the wrong message to other women that they could deliver a healthy baby with diabetes.
Despite this, Berry continues to be a voice for Diabetes in her own right. The Oscar winner has proudly followed her Keto diet for the last 30 years. At 54, she reflected on her initial diagnosis, saying, “It was a moment I’ll never forget. I had to respin the way I lived my life and have carried that with me ever since.” Berry heavily credits her Keto diet for “slowing down her aging process” and opened up about it in an Instagram post in 2018.
“Being diabetic most of my life, I have always had to take food very seriously. I believe it’s been largely responsible for slowing down my aging process.” She went on to say, “The keto lifestyle offers so many benefits such as weight loss, appetite control, more energy, and better mental performance. If you’re like me, you can possibly reverse type 2 diabetes; you’ll experience better physical endurance, better skin, and also less acne if that’s an issue.”
Berry’s struggled ever since to create healthier patterns in her life and break cycles. She talks about an incident in 2004 that really helped her make the shift after a fight with an abusive partner left her with 80% hearing loss in one ear. “I want women to stand up and break the silence and get rid of the shame and the fear and find a way to stand up for themselves,” Berry said in a statement. As a result, in addition to being open about her fight with diabetes, she’s also been open about her domestic abuse struggles.
Berry claims to have grown up watching her mother deal with similar things and trying hard not to repeat her mistakes. “Knowing that she wanted nothing more than for her little girls to see her be empowered and be a woman of strength, but having no way to make that happen—was heartbreaking for me,” Berry recalled. She goes on to say that even though her mother stayed because she thought it was for the best, it did eventually harm Berry and her siblings more than help.
The actress seems to have her symptoms under control. She maintains a very active lifestyle often posting workout training sessions with her personal trainer on social media.
