Love & Hip-Hop is a universe within itself. Spanning several cities, genres, and demographics, the VH1 staple is a reality television heavyweight. People tune in weekly to partake in the drama of their favorite castmates and have followed some of their favorite couples for years now. One couple that has been around since the series’ inception is Jim Jones and Chrissy Lampkin. The OG’s of the show have been entangled in a will they, won’t they dance forever regarding them ever getting married. Chrissy is letting fans know that while she used to long to walk down the aisle, it just is not as important to her as it used to be.

Many do not know this, but the Love & Hip-Hop world owes a great deal of its success to Chrissy and Jim Jones. VH1 had initially signed on to follow Jimmy around and show off his life. While that pilot did not get picked up, they realized really quickly that there might be a show behind the scenes involving his wife and her friends. Yandy Smith was the one who initially pitched the idea to the network because she was Jim’s manager at the time. Her dynamic with his longtime girlfriend Chrissy helped really secure the show and establish its dynamic.
Chrissy’s story line was important in the first few seasons because she established the role of the long-term hip-hop artist’s girlfriend. Always loyal, always put second. Chrissy fought for her respect in the relationship but was always put on hold when it came time to make things official. Chrissy got so tired of waiting that in one season, she actually popped the question on Jim Jones instead because he was taking so long.
Chrissy reveals she initially had plans to perform a burlesque number before popping the question. An emotionally Chrissy asked for her support system to come to the front of the stage and tearfully professed her love for Jim Jones. She eventually said the words started to “flow,” and she was able to tune everything out. When she finally asked him to marry her, a smiling Jim tossed his head back in shock and said “I’m with you,” while his mother angrily stormed out. Jim would lady propose back during a trip to Miami.
Chrissy got a lot of negative feedback from male fans who felt she disrespected Jim by getting on one knee. Jones also got some negativity from female fans who wondered why he kept making Chrissy wait so long when she clearly was all in already. Despite all of this, the duo continued to soldier forward as a team and even returned to the series after a brief hiatus away. During her return, Chrissy reflected on the proposal and how she felt she and Jim needed to be whole before they could commit to each other in an ultimate way. While promoting the series on The Real, Chrissy admitted that marriage was no longer a priority for her. “Our relationship is in a good place. I thought that [marriage] was the natural progression, but it’s not for everybody. So, we’re good right now.”
The duo has been together going on 18 years.
