Garcelle Beauvais Says If We Want Women To Be Treated Equal, Men Should Be Entitled To Alimony Too

Marriage is a beautiful thing. Unfortunately, many tend to end in divorce. Some of them are amicable, while the rest tend to be extremely long and messy. Child support and alimony often intensify the battles making them all the more contentious. A recent article from The New York Times titled “The Paradox of Alimony for Men” has recently been published, declaring the law “blind to gender” since its 1979 ruling. Speaking on the subject now are the ladies of The Real, and Garcelle Beauvais has just offered her unique opinion.

Co-host Jeannie Mai informs viewers of the status of many women who have begun to work in “more prestigious positions” while more men have opted to be stay-at-home dads. These men, however, are often scrutinized as many judges tend to overlook their need for support, which highlights the incredible biases in the system. The hosts speak on whether or not men should receive alimony as they are often looked at as breadwinners.

Comedian Loni Love sheds light on the law being an old one, and as the country continues to move in the direction of modernization, women are also subjected to feeling the brunt of alimony. This tends to occur more once the woman has been determined as the breadwinner in the family. Examples such as Janet Jackson, Madonna, and Halle Berry were used to show how many millions of dollars were dished out in alimony payments as their marriages failed.

Actress and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Garcelle Beauvais then offered an interesting take. Conversations concerning equality have been prevalent for years, and according to Beauvais, the aspect of deserving men receiving alimony should be considered. “You know, it’s so funny because I feel like, ‘Is it bias to men?’ And I go, ‘I’m ok with that,” said Beauvais as she laughs. The Jamie Foxx Show actress continued, “But at the same time, if we want everybody to be equal, then the men should get it too if the woman is making more money.”

Garcelle Beauvais has been married twice in the past. Her first marriage was in 1990 to producer Daniel Saunders. They would marry two months after meeting and in 1991, she gave birth to a son. But marriage for them did not lead to forever because, in 2000, they would divorce. Her next marriage, to talent agent Mike Nilon in 2001 started off beautifully as the couple also had twin boys. However, their marriage would also lead to divorce after nine years when Beauvais found that Nilon had been having an affair.

In an email that Beauvais sent to Nilon’s associates and coworkers, she exposed him for his cheating ways. “What do [Tiger Woods/Jesse James/Mike Nilon] have in common,” she wrote in the leaked email. “I found out today that MY husband of almost 9 yrs has been having an affair for 5 yrs with some s**t in Chicago. I am devastated!!!! And I have been duped!! Our boys don’t deserve this!”
