Iggy Azalea is one of those rappers that many appear to love to hate. However, she has continued to travail with her musical efforts. But despite her best efforts to render her musical gifts to the world, it seems like Azalea gets more attention for other aspects of her life. One of the latest, is the rapper’s performance during Long Beach pride.
Amethyst Kelly, professionally referred to as Iggy Azalea, first burst onto the scene around 2012 for many. The Australian-born artist moved to the United States, particularly Miami, in 2006 and began to work hard at her dreams. By 2010, she’d gained some industry friends that suggested she take her talents to Los Angeles. Things began to turn up for Iggy Azalea the following year when she released her debut mixtape, Ignorant Art, in September 2011. If she had detractors, the percentage was beginning to lean toward believers. Azalea’s mixtape featured collaborations with Problem and YG.
Soon enough, the buzz surrounding Iggy Azalea was undeniable. The rapper appeared as one of XXL’s Top 10 Freshmen in 2012 and was quickly signed to Grand Hustle Records, helmed by T.I. Iggy Azalea suffered a few delays and setbacks, but she finally released the breakout single “Fancy,” featuring Charli XCX. It was a worldwide smash and undoubtedly put Iggy Azalea on the map. In the United States alone, “Fancy” sold millions of copies and, as of March 2020, has been certified 8x Multi-Platinum. Her debut single is also approaching 10 million copies sold.
The success of “Fancy” finally propelled the label to release Iggy Azalea’s debut album, The New Classic, in 2014. The album debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 and did impressive numbers for the freshman project. Next up for Iggy Azalea came her Rita Ora-assisted single “Black Widow.” Although it didn’t fare as well as “Fancy,” the single was still a massive success for the rapper. The success of The New Classic prompted the label to release a reissued version of the album titled Reclassified. This housed two new singles, “Beg For It” and “Trouble,” featuring Jennifer Hudson.
As the saying goes, what goes up must come down. Following her debut, Iggy Azalea’s once-promising rap career started to suffer from a decline. She began to work on an album that she announced was called Digital Distortion, which never surfaced. However, she did receive a few feature credits, including a rap verse on Jennifer Lopez’s “Booty.” More changes occurred within Iggy’s career. She had since left Virgin Records and joined the Def Jam Records roster. But after a public dispute with the label head XXL reported spilled over to social media at the time, Azalea took her talents to Island Records. This was due to the label feeling as though many of her latest singles were not as impactful as her previous ones.
Four years after the release of her debut, Iggy Azalea finally unleashed another project called Survive the Summer. But, unfortunately, it was a 6-song EP that included the single “Kream” featuring Tyga that, once again, didn’t make much of an impact. But even though she’d been on a major label for years, Iggy Azalea finally decided to go the independent artist route. In 2019, she released her sophomore album, In My Defense. The lead single, “Sally Walker,” garnered some buzz for the rapper. However, the album, featuring a guest list of Juicy J, Kash Doll, and Tyga, did not do well and received negative reviews.
Finally, Iggy Azalea independently released her third studio album, End Of An Era, in August of 2021. It featured the dancy single “I Am The Strip Club.” However, although better received by critics, the album was another commercial failure for the rapper.Iggy Azalea has been in the news for everything but her music lately, from who she’s dating to issues with her child’s father, rapper Playboi Carti.
It was recently rumored that Azalea is in a romantic relationship with controversial singer Tory Lanez. However, Vlogger TashaK recently made erroneous claims concerning their alleged relationship and spoke on Iggy’s son, which absolutely got her attention. Taking to Twitter, she called out TashaK and threatened with legal action if she spoke on the rapper or her son again. But as it pertains to her music, Iggy Azalea has been chiefly getting recognized for her twerking skills. In one video, she performs in a neon green outfit at an undisclosed show, throwing her cakes for the audience’s enjoyment. In another video, the rapper was recorded throwing her assets around to her single, ‘Work.’
But while she’s being praised by many for her skills, some feel that Iggy Azalea is doing too much. So taking to Twitter, the rapper had a message for her detractors discussing how she’s genuinely happy about herself while calling out the very mean spirited people on social media.
