It may have taken over 25 years, but Da Brat is finally living her truth, publicly.
But the rapper is setting the record straight: Just because she may look a certain way, Da Brat is not to be boxed in. A recent Instagram Live session set the scene for Da Brat to address a fan who made a comment about her appearance as a lesbian woman.
When Shawntae Harris, who we would all come to know as Da Brat, stepped on the scene, she was hard to miss. Signed to So So Def, she would give looks that likened a woman’s approach to rapper Snoop Dogg’s look. From the oversized and baggy attire to her long, beaded braids, Da Brat rocked her lane.
Questions would arise surrounding the Billboard-Award-winning rapper’s sexuality over the years. This would be confirmed in a March 2020 post on Instagram where Da Brat shared an emotional video of a Bentley gifted to her for her birthday.
Being a private person, naturally, Da Brat stated that all changed when she met her “heart’s match.” Dupart, she told Variety, was the one that she felt the need to “meet in the middle” and compromise for because “She’s the one.” Dupart is a business owner that has a major social media presence of her own.
In the spirit of sharing more of her truth, Da Brat shared on the Tamron Hall Show that she first felt feelings for a woman while working on her debut album. Prior to that, she’d always had “little boyfriends” as she described it to Hall. But after connecting with the woman, who was employed by her label, she found herself missing her.
The connection between the two made Da Brat begin to question herself but kept those feelings to herself. “I did anything that I had to do to keep it private,” Da Brat said.
Now that the lid is off, Da Brat is wasting no time in blocking any assumptions that have been or are made about her. During a recent Instagram Live session, a comment from a fan caught the rapper’s attention which she had to address.
While the “What’chu Like” rapper was getting her makeup done, a fan states that because she’s gay she’s “not supposed to be feminine” or “wear makeup.”The comment brings Da Brat to declare, “B***h, I am beautiful. I am not a stud,” she clarifies. She then goes on to state that she has “nothing against studs” and also resolves that she is “not fem” but simply, herself.
“I do all things, and I CAN do all things through Christ, who strengthens mwah,” Da Brat adds. She then goes on to list all of the things that others may think she doesn’t do, such as laundry, cooking, and wearing “beautiful underwear.”
“I love lace. My nails stay done,” the rapper said while showing off her freshly done nails. Before moving on from the fan’s comment, Da Brat issues a warning to anyone who thinks to come out of pocket.”Please avoid saying stupid s**t to me, because I really don’t have time for it,” she warns.
