Nicki Minaj is gearing up for a comeback of sorts. The hip-hop legend took some time off to become a wife and a mother. In the midst of that, she also had to deal with some family tragedies, including the passing of her father and her brother’s incarceration. It’s been a wild couple of years for the “Super Bass” hitmaker, who has not completely gone off the radar but has not had an album or single hit on the level of some of her bigger eras. She’s been prepping fans for new music with a series of interviews and IG Lives opening up about her upcoming projects and plans for the future. Not included in those plans? A collaboration with Miami duo The City Girls due to their past disrespect.
Nicki Minaj’s success undoubtedly reignited interests in female hip-hop, but unfortunately, her talent level made it hard for anyone to properly follow in her footsteps for a while. The rapper also shut out a lot of her competition early on by not collaborating with many female acts between 2009 and 2018. This changed when Cardi B was able to infiltrate the mainstream. While not as lyrically prone as Nicki Minaj, Cardi brought a level of likability and personality to female hip-hop that made it more accessible to acts like The City Girls, Megan Thee Stallion, and Latto.
In addition to this, Cardi was quicker to embrace other female MCs and do collaborations with them. The ‘Bodak Yellow’ rapper and The City Girls wasted no time giving the world “Twerk” in 2018 followed by records with Megan Thee Stallion, and Lizzo. It is safe to assume that’s because The City Girls were quicker to put their support behind Cardi B when she and Nicki had their infamous brawl during Fashion Week. In a Breakfast Club interview around that time, Yung Miami declared she was team Cardi and thanked The Bronx superstar for her support. Shortly after this, Yung Miami took to social media to reveal that Nicki Minaj had blocked her. Despite this, Yung Miami and JT still expressed interest in working with Nicki feeling “it’s only right” and stating that she is the only female MC they have not collaborated with.
So how does Nicki feel about all of this? Well, during a recent discussion, Minaj opened up about her feelings towards the City Girls. Nicki said that she was interested in working with them early on after seeing one of their videos. The rapper expressed interest in jumping on one of their records but was then made aware of an interview where the girls spoke ill of her. Nicki says she is a human being before she is an artist, and would not feel comfortable working with someone who has already express not liking her. Nicki says that once you say something online or in an interview, it is there forever.
“I like you, but you don’t really like me,” said Nicki. “If you hear somebody was saying things about you. Not just one thing, but repeated things. Repeated tweets for years. Why would I work with somebody that doesn’t like me?”
It is unclear if she is referencing the Breakfast Club interview, but Barbs did manage to pull receipts of The City Girls tweeting their dislike for Nicki in the past.
In a screenshot from 2017, JT expressed that she did not care for Nicki and hoped that Cardi B would take off soon and become a bigger star. In 2012, Yung Miami also spoke out against Nicki, asking her followers, “Am I the only one that doesn’t like Nicki Minaj?” In another series of Tweets from 2012, Yung Miami said she was team Lil Kim and called Nicki Minaj ugly and “a clown.”
At one point, it was reported that the girls had recorded a diss track coming at both Nicki Minaj and Cardi B. This story broke while JT was in jail and led many to believe that she had recorded her verse from behind bars. In the freestyle, JT claims she’s beefing with Nicki. The City Girl also claims Minaj can’t rip no beat and got dropped like some groceries. Yung Miami took to social media to clear things up, letting fans know it was just a drunk freestyle from before they were famous and never expected anyone to hear it.
With this many receipts working against them, do you think The City Girls should give up? Or should Nicki give them a chance to explain themselves?
